In-line Interferometer for Surface Topology Inspection of Flexible Electronics

In the production of flexible electronics, such as organic LEDs or photo-voltaic foils, grooves through one or more layers are made with laser ablation, to create functional isolators or junctions. To guarantee the quality of the electronics, the laser scribe width and depth needs to be precisely controlled and inspected. For in-line inspection of the laser scribes, the wavelength scanning interferometer based tool ARINNA (“Areal Interferometer for Nanoscale Structures”) offers a potentially revolutionary measurement technology.

Gravitational wave detector: an oversize strain gauge of sensitivity 10-23 m/m

Since the first detection in 2015 about 25 gravitational wave (GW) events have been recorded by the global detector network. These discoveries trigger the development of new generation of large scale terrestrial GW antennas, aiming to improve the sensitivity another order of magnitude. This presentation shows how such small strains are measured and what technical challenges are faced to be able to directly “hear” the heart beat of the big bang in 2035.

Van POP naar pilot-machine: ontwikkeling van productietechniek voor brandwondbehandeling

Demcon heeft een unieke productietechniek ontwikkeld voor het maken van een medische disposable, welke gebruikt wordt bij behandeling van brandwonden. Het optimaal vergroten van het huidoppervlak bij transplantatie is een van de grootste uitdagingen bij patiënten die meer dan 30% van hun lichaamsoppervlak ernstig verbrand hebben. In samenwerking met Humeca uit Borne, die deze techniek wereldwijd op de markt brengt en toepast, is eerst een proof-of-principle machine gemaakt van waaruit een pilot-lijn is ontwikkeld. Door een speciale vouwtechniek kan eenvoudig om worden geschakeld voor het maken van verschillende productvarianten.

Design of a thermally actuated objective lens focus system

In his work on a lens focus system, under supervision of Nick Rosielle TU/e and Pieter Nuij NTS-group Paul has shown competency in the mechanical design for nanometer-accurate positioning, as well in the full system design and integration by combining analytical modelling, simulations and experimental verification. Paul has taken promising steps towards creating and controlling relatively fast thermal actuators that allow for very accurate and stable positioning. He has demonstrated good analytical skills and an ability to practically apply his knowledge to a variety of fields in an industrial environment.

Ontwerpen met keramiek en een werkend prototype van een hybride rechtgeleiding weten te realiseren. Aangetoond dat zijn ontwerp goed functioneert en voldoet aan de eis dat eenvoudig de juiste voorspanning is aan te brengen. Tevens vertoonde de hybride rechtgeleiding een veel lagere rolweerstand dan de bestaande keramische rechtgeleiding en was die stiller.

Ontwerpprincipes en numerieke analyse combineren met een actieve verkenning van het gebied van de rubbertechnologie. De grenzen verleggen die worden opgelegd door het veelgebruikte principe van exact bepaald ontwerpen. Daartoe ontwikkelde een visco-elastisch materiaal en demonstreerde hij in een zelfontworpen opstelling hoe dat kan worden gebruikt om een buigmechanisme te ‘overbelasten’ zonder het gebruikelijke daaraan verbonden nadeel, d.w.z. een gevoeligheid voor fouten in de uitlijning (assemblagetoleranties).

The alignment and fixation of multiple single-mode optical fibers to photonic integrated circuits is currently a challenging, expensive and time-consuming task. Maatwerk oplossingen voor nauwkeurige meetvraagstukken met Kit encoders

De vraag naar hoogwaardige, compacte systemen, waarmee nauwkeurig snelheid en positie gemeten kan worden is de laatste jaren alleen maar toegenomen. Optische en magnetische maatwerk kit encoders geven antwoord op deze vraag. De kit encoders kunnen op maat gemaakt worden in bijna elk gewenste vorm of uitvoering; omdat ze “shaftless”, “bearingless” en “frameless” uitgevoerd kunnen worden. Hetgeen resulteert in een meetsysteem zonder bewegende delen, en daarmee vrij van slijtage. De kit encoders kunnen zowel incrementeel als absoluut, met zeer hoge puls/code aantallen uitgevoerd worden.

Gas mass measurement & control, MEMS vs capillary sensors and Total costs of ownership

All instrumentation, for temperature, pressure, and flow is based on a sensor that is measuring something which is converted into a measured value. Obviously the characteristics and quality of the sensor has a major influence on the performance of the instrument.

Thermal Mass Flow meters and-Controllers (MFC’s) are instruments to measure and/or control gas flow. Typically in flow ranges of around a few milliliters to 1000 Normal liters per minute, and everything in between and sometimes a bit more. To emphasize: these instruments read mass flow. Or flow in standardized volumetric units. The sensor can be a capillary sensor, or a MEMS sensor. Both sensors have advantages and also limitations. In this presentation these will be commented with an eye for the technical differences and the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Precise electrochemical metal machining: technology and advantages of manufacturing tungsten carbides parts

PEMTec’s PECM machines allow customers until 2019 to produce metal parts with complex geometries in a much faster and cheaper way then with conventional methods. Stainless steel, superalloys and PM steels are machined by multiple electrodes in shorter process times, regardless of their hardness and toughness. Completely contactless and without thermal or mechanical influences, workpieces can be produced totally burr-free and without micro cracks. Roughing, finishing and polishing in on set up are possible. High production opportunities without tool wear we achieve accuracy and surface qualities of Ra <= 0.03 µm. Economical production of high end parts are realized today in.

However the newest PEMTec development is a great solution for tungsten carbides industry. This year we introduced a new P-ECM machine concept that can offer unique possibilities and economic efficiency in the production of precision tungsten carbides parts (up to 15%). PEMTec realised complex structures with only one machining pass in much less time than conventional methods.

Adaptive laser micro-milling of highly accurate shapes in tungsten carbide

The presentation shows a newly developed technology to produce highly accurate 3D shaped surfaces for parts like stamp tools and molds, resulting from a collaboration of the companies Kern Microtechnik and Lightmotif. An adaptive laser micro-milling process was realized that can automatically correct deviations during the laser machining process, based on measurements of the errors performed by an optical sensor. Together with other sensor and calibration devices this technique is now applied in a machining system that can autonomously perform all necessary calibrations needed to achieve a highly accurate laser machining process. Thanks to the use of an ultrashort pulse laser, the machine is especially suited for hard to machine materials like cemented tungsten carbide, hardened steel or other ceramics.
