Thermal battery state of charge estimation: sensors and modelling

Salt-based thermal batteries are an attractive option for low-carbon home heating. Unlike conventional home heating systems, a thermal battery requires a control system that also takes into account the state of charge of the battery. However, in contrast to electrochemical batteries, there are no conventional measures for thermal state of charge estimation. We present a prototype sensor system and a rate equation model to estimate the state of charge. We will also discuss requirements for commercial deployment.
