Instruments for earth observation are engineered according to the principles of precision mechanics such that their sensitive optical system is not affected by the thermal and mechanical environment of outer space. At the same time, it needs to survive the trip up. In a research project for ESA, we developed a two-mirror telescope, with its main components - including the mirrors - additively manufactured out of AlSi10Mg, and designed using topology optimization.
In the presentation we will share our experience with the development and testing of this instrument.
