If a laser hits a bunch of electrons, high resolution X-rays are generated. Based on the concepts of TU/e and accelerator technology of CERN we believe it is possible to create a compact high intensity X-ray source based on this technology. At this moment a EU project is ongoing working on this proof of concept: smart*light. Success could trigger a brand new market: synchrotron functionality in your own basement. Many fields could benefit here: from materials analysis to medical research to cultural heritage restauration.
