New challenges and opportunities for high precision optics and mechanics at European XFEL

The European XFEL is a large x-ray free-electron laser facility already operating in the Hamburg area of Germany. It is designed to provide a transversally fully coherent x-ray radiation with outstanding characteristics in terms of high repetition rate, short wavelength, short pulses and and high average brilliance. The three main beamlines are operating or under final commissioning. The extraordinary characteristics of the beam are coming at the cost of many challenges for high precision optics and mechanics. We will describe the project, taking some particular examples of the present and future challenges.

Ultrafast lasers for advanced applications; High power femtosecond lasers, Spatial Light Modulation and transparent material processing

The precision needed nowadays, exceeds the limits of what can be achieved with traditional manufacturing methods, hence the rise of femtosecond laser applications.
New industrial solutions that benefit from the advantage of femtosecond lasers, such as the ability to induce absorption in any, even transparent, material while precisely controlling the heat affected zone, are discovered every day.
Three related advanced femtosecond laser topics will be discussed: the technological development of high power femtosecond lasers and its potential applications; Spatial Light modulator that allows modifying the beam profile in any shape for advanced processing and high throughput; and the processing of transparent materials.

Precision in laser processing of glass

Cutting of glass by laser processing has started close to 20 year ago already.
The latest technology by using ultra short laser pulses has been adapted for different applications in mobile phone, optical components, automobile and other markets.
It provides perfect glass edge qualities with automated separation in combination with dust free processing and high throughput.
Applications like cutting of optical components often require very precise dimensions in single digit µm range.
But not only the product dimensions also the process technology is in need of a highly accurate system in order to enable a stable process for cutting of glass in mass production.
This presentation will show the working principle of glass cutting by ultra short pulse laser processing and discuss the general requirements on system architecture in regards to precision and throughput.

Laser micro-milling and micro-texturing on curved surfaces using ultrashort pulse lasers

Laser micromachning using ultrashort pulse lasers can be used to machine micron-sized features that are not possible to machine using longer pulsed lasers, and they enable machining of a much larger variety of materials.
Applications of micro-texturing include changing the functional properties of a surface, such as friction or wetting properties. Micro-milling is used to machine accurately shaped pockets into materials, for example to machine molds, tooling or for rapid prototyping of small parts.
Recent advances of this technology are presented, together with a 5-axis machining system that was specifically developed for enabling texturing and milling on complex curved surfaces.

Optical Quality inspection for small structures

Today’s sensors meet structure sizes in the μm or even nm range at high circuit complexity. These structures are usually printed in thin layer technology and coated in thin film technology. Sensors as well as glass-material usually have to be investigated for surface and coating defects by optical techniques. So far, it has been impossible or prohibitively expensive to implement automated quality assurance procedures for each individual optical measure and at high throughput. Quality assessment is therefore mostly limited to statistical sampling techniques employing specially trained personnel performing the evaluations. In the present pilot project, the authors have demonstrated a successful implementation of a system which adjusts the focus and RGB-Lighting with new developed technique features. Next, the image data are transferred to the AlfaVis analysis software developed and distributed by SMD Production-Technology. This software package is developed for the detection of various types of structural defects on the original sample, like missing circuit structures, short circuits or any other surface defects or surface pollution. The system is flexible and can be adapted quickly and easily to a change of sample layout requiring only minutes for the adjustment to the new layout and to the optimization process.
