In many different applications, materials with different physical properties need to be joint in a reliable way. If these materials have a difference in CTE (Coefficient of thermal expension), the design, the choices of the materials and the method of joining are things that need careful consideration. ASML’s product performance roadmap (overlay and throughput, image quality) requires ever more accurate and faster movements, more accurate and stable optical imaging capability. Low/no wear modules and parts are needed to maintain performance over the processing of millions of wafers at customers fabs.. Precision engineering involves applying the right design principles and selecting appropriate materials and manufacturing techniques to achiev this. In the presentation, an overview will be given of how precision engineering enables the ASML litho machines roadmap, what barriers there are and how we work on various breakthroughs looking into smarter mechatronics concepts, better materials and manufacturing techniques.

A positioning module consisting of a Voice Coil Actuator (VCA) and a straight guide mechanism with gravity compensation and stiffness compensation is designed. Design goals are minimalizing dissipation and required volume, due to limitations in cryo.

Scalable ultrafast liquid encapsulation

Design of a Bio-Inspired Needle for Prostate Cancer Treatment

This work presents a medical instrument consisting of a bio-inspired needle and a 3D-printed body that can be used for focal prostate cancer treatment. The needle can be inserted into soft tissue with a zero external push force, inspired by the propagating motion of the ovipositor of the parasitic wasp.

Towards the Einstein Telescope; tenders and challenges

When black holes collide, their enormous gravitational forces create ripples in the fabric of space and time. Although Einstein predicted the existence of these gravitational waves, he was certain that they could never be detected. Advances in technology, from lasers to modern quantum optics, have fundamentally changed the way we design precision instruments. Measuring gravitational waves is now possible but remains one of the greatest challenges in experimental physics.

The Einstein Telescope is the initiative of more than 750 scientists to create a new gravitational wave observatory in Europe. In 2021 Einstein Telescope entered the European roadmap of large scientific infrastructures (ESFRI), after a succesfull application supported by 5 European countries (including Belgium and the Netherlands). The Euregion Meuse-Rhine (EMR) is listed as one of the two possible locations for the Einstein Telescope.

In order to reach its ambitious sensitive target the Einstein Telescope will require significant technology advances compared to current facilities, from cryogenic suspensions to Newtonian noise subtraction. In this talk I will provide a short overview of the unique challenges and plans for the Einstein Telescope.

A facility for the characterization of materials for the energy transition

In this lecture, I will introduce DIFFER’s facilities for the characterization of materials for the energy transition. In the first part of the talk, will focus on facilities  and equipment that we have developed at DIFFER in recent years for diverse energy applications. I will illustrate what we can measure and which challenges are involved for these high tech instruments. In the second part of the talk, I will take you along our strategy and plans for the coming years and will focus in particular on what facilities are needed for designing and developing highly performing energy devices.

Dutch contribution to the James Webb Space Telescope

The Hubble Space Telescope has produces stunning images for the last 31+ years. In little over a month its successor will be launched: the James Webb Space Telescope. The Netherlands contributed to the development of the scientific instrument MIRI: the Mid InfraRed Instrument. This presentation will show the improved capabilities of MIRI and JWST, its concept, design, realization and qualification process, as well as the launch process.

LOFAR and the Square Kilometre Array – the Construction Phase and Beyond

De Square Kilometre Array (SKA) zal de meest krachtige radio telescoop ter wereld worden. De SKA zal het mogelijk maken om doorbraken in de wetenschap te bereiken en zal het inzicht op het Heelal gaan veranderen. Opgesplitst tussen afgelegen woestijnen in Zuid-Afrika en Australië zal deze telescoop bestaan uit honderden antennes die een onvoorstelbare hoeveelheid data gaan produceren.

Nederland is een officiële partner in de SKA en ASTRON leidt de Nederlands inspanning in dit internationale project. De constructie van de SKA zal beginnen in 2021. De Nederlandse bijdrage zal een belangrijke ‘driver’ zijn voor innovatie in Informatie Technologie.

De (Europese) Internationale LOFAR telescoop krijgt de komende jaren een majeure upgrade. En worden er de komende jaren ook nieuwe stations in Europa gebouwd.

In deze presentatie wordt een overzicht gegeven hoe de onderliggende technologie van de SKA en LOFAR er uit ziet en welke kansen er zijn voor de Nederlandse industrie.

Applying deep learning to make smarter machines

Deep learning is a new versatile AI technology that solves problems that can’t be solved by traditional engineering techniques. For example, deep learning already outperforms traditional computer vision techniques on many complex visual tasks. With deep learning as a new engineering tool, we can now build innovative machines for traditionally challenging domains such as agriculture. In this lecture we share our experience in building vision systems for agricultural applications and demonstrate how we applied deep learning to understand the complex visual world of plants.

The Laser Toolkit for High Precision Prototyping

Lasers have earned a solid position in the prototyping of precision parts. Supported by the increased performances (e.g. power and stability) as well as the development of new sources (e.g. Ultra Short Pulse Lasers) the toolkit available within prototyping is steadily expanding.

Aluminium precisie extrusie klinkt als een bekend proces, maar vaak wordt hierbij gedacht aan het “standaard” extrusie proces! Met precisie extrusie zijn de mogelijkheden vele malen groter; profielen met toleranties vanaf +/- 0,02 mm, profielen vanaf ∅ 3 mm en leveringen vanaf 10 kg / order! Ook biedt precisie extrusie een enorme vormvrijheid in het ontwerpen van een profiel. Naast de precisie extrusie heeft MIFA ook de mogelijkheid tot het verder bewerken van de profielen (cnc bewerken, oppervlaktebehandeling en assemblage), waardoor ook een compleet product geleverd zou kunnen worden. Wij denken graag mee in het creëren van een optimaal product!

Photo Chemical etching: the eminent technique for producing precision parts of almost all metals, innovative alloys and composite metals

Photo Chemical Etching is one of the very few manufacturing techniques to produce (metal) precision parts without adding tension or burrs to the material. This technique is applicable to a very large range of metals, alloys and composites like clad materials and suitable for very small quantities as well as for very large series using an unique reel-to-reel technique.
During this presentation the different possibilities, design rules and cost aspects will be discussed.

Why Coherence Scanning Interferometry for Optics Applications?

Optical Polishing is a fabrication technique developed specifically to achieve minimal defects and smooth micro-roughness values. The study of surface texture is becoming more and more common place for quality control. Because of this need to maintain quality and to minimalize, surface defects and imperfections there are more and more technologies available for looking at the surface and due to the differences in these techniques; each has its own specialist applications. Here the benefits of both coherence scanning interferometry systems are used to measure surface metrology with nano and micro metre precision for both form and texture.
