Compact accelerator technology developed for high-energy physics is now used in a wide range of applications. These range from research accelerators such as linear colliders and X-ray free electron lasers to medical accelerators, for example for innovative FLASH radiation therapy. Key components of all these accelerators are ultra-high precision radio frequency accelerating structures. These components are described and a survey of the applications of the accelerator technology is presented.
